Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
